Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a species of flowering plant in the family Passifloraceae. Its origins can be traced back to South America, where it is native to regions spanning from southern Brazil through Paraguay and into northern Argentina. In 2008, Alexander Stein founded the Black Forest distillery with the intention of producing the best gin in the world. Named Monkey 47 in tribute to British Commander Montgomery, who himself produced gin in the Black Forest in the 1950s, it is crafted in micro-batches (1,250 liters) and distilled in small steam-heated stills.
